Hannah Gadsby’s self-described swan song, triumphed last night at the 2017 Melbourne International Comedy Festival, taking out the Barry Award for Best Show.

Announced at the traditional late-night ceremony at The Festival Club, Gadsby’s show Nanette edged out fellow nominees Damien Power’s Utopia: Now In 3D!, Anne Edmonds’ No Offence, None Taken, Tom Walker’s Bee Boo, Richard Gadd’s Monkey See, Monkey Do and Sammy J’s Hero Complex.

To win the Barry Award, named after founding patron of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Barry Humphries, a show must be performed at least 10 times throughout the festival. It is judged by a secret panel of media and industry professionals – and is one of the highest honours in the comedy world.

It has also been announced that Gadsby will perform an encore show of Nanette next Saturday 29 April at The Comedy Theatre. Tickets go on sale at 10am on Monday.

The sophomore winner of the Pinder Prize, which honours festival co-founder John Pinder, went to Damien Power’s Utopia: Now In 3D!, which will now see him take his show to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Furthermore, there were joint accolades for the People’s Choice Award, with Wil Anderson adding a sixth notch to his belt alongside Judith Lucy and Denise Scott tying, respectively for Critically Wil and Disappointments, both selling the most tickets throughout the festival.
